Women's League Cup Set for Major Overhaul

Football

England's secondary women's cup competition will adopt a new format and name from the 2026-27 season.

The Women's League Cup will undergo significant changes for the 2026-27 season, including a new format and a likely name alteration. The competition, currently known as the Subway Women's League Cup, will "probably not" retain its current title, with discussions ongoing for a new name, according to BBC Sport.

From next season, Women's Super League clubs competing in the UEFA Women's Champions League will no longer participate in the League Cup. All other participating clubs will enter a "Swiss-style format" league phase, mirroring the Champions League structure. Each team will play six different opponents, with three home and three away fixtures. The top eight teams from this league phase will then progress directly to the quarter-finals. There will be no play-off round due to calendar constraints.
