York City have secured their return to the Football League following a victory in the National League play-off final at Wembley.

York City secured promotion to League Two after defeating Boston United 2-0 in the National League North play-off final. The victory at the LNER Community Stadium ends the club's five-year absence from the Football League, according to Sky Sports. Goals from Lenell John-Lewis and Maziar Kouhyar ensured the win for the Minstermen in front of a record crowd of 7,500 supporters.

Broadcaster David Ward described the atmosphere as pure ecstasy during his radio commentary for the match, per the York Press. The result follows a period of stability under manager John Askey, who took over in November with the team in mid-table. York previously suffered successive relegations between 2016 and 2017 which saw them drop into the regional tiers of non-league football.

Chairman Jason McGill stated the achievement represents a significant milestone for the North Yorkshire club. The team will now begin preparations for the 2022-23 season in the fourth tier of English football. This promotion marks the first time York City have reached the Football League since their relegation in 2016.
