Premier League dual ownership rules under scrutiny

Multi-club ownership regulations could impact European qualification for Premier League teams finishing in continental spots.

UEFA regulations regarding multi-club ownership may prevent some Premier League teams from competing in the same European competitions as their sister clubs. According to The Guardian, Manchester City and Girona previously faced scrutiny after both qualified for the Champions League. Similar concerns exist for Manchester United and Nice due to Ineos owning stakes in both clubs.

UEFA rules currently prohibit two clubs with the same owner from entering the same tournament to ensure sporting integrity. If two such teams qualify for the same competition, the side with the lower domestic league position is typically relegated to a secondary tournament. Crystal Palace previously navigated these challenges during the 2024-25 season due to John Textor's multi-club portfolio, per Sky Sports.

The Premier League recently discussed tightening its own rules on associated party transactions and ownership structures. Clubs must prove that no individual or entity exercises a decisive influence over more than one team in a single UEFA competition. Failure to comply could lead to a loss of European places for English sides, according to The Athletic.
