Authorities abandoned the Primera Division fixture between Cerro Porteno and Libertad after 29 minutes on Sunday. Violent clashes erupted between rival factions of the Cerro Porteno support at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco, according to reports from Reuters. The referee halted play as supporters fought in the stands and threw projectiles onto the pitch.
Police officers used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowds during the disturbance. Six police officers sustained injuries during the violence, while security forces detained dozens of fans. Per reports from the Associated Press, the Paraguayan Football Association confirmed the match could not continue due to a lack of security guarantees.
Libertad led the match 1-0 at the time of the abandonment following a goal from Oscar Cardozo. Officials have not yet announced a date for the remainder of the fixture or potential disciplinary measures. This incident marks the second time this season that crowd trouble has forced a top-flight game in Asuncion to be stopped early.
