Osian Roberts influences European coaching landscape

Football

Welsh coach Osian Roberts has shaped the careers of several prominent managers and now holds a senior role at Italian club Como 1907.

Osian Roberts previously served as the technical director for the Football Association of Wales, where he oversaw the education of several future managers. According to The Athletic, Roberts mentored Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas, and Mikel Arteta during their coaching badge assessments. His work with the Welsh national side coincided with their progression to the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

Roberts currently holds the position of head of development at Como 1907, as reported by Sky Sports. He initially joined the Italian club as interim manager in December 2023, leading them to promotion from Serie B. Following the appointment of Cesc Fabregas as head coach, Roberts moved into his current backroom role to oversee the club's long-term structure.

His coaching career also includes a spell as assistant manager to Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace between 2021 and 2023. Roberts' influence on the modern game stems from his tenure at the Dragon Park development centre in Newport, where he modernised the Welsh coaching curriculum, per The Guardian.
