Javier Mascherano has resigned from his position as head coach of Inter Miami, according to The Athletic. The former Argentina international departs the club after taking charge in late 2024. During his tenure, he led the team to the Supporters' Shield with a record-breaking 74 points in the regular season.
Inter Miami suffered a first-round exit in the MLS Cup play-offs under Mascherano, losing to Atlanta United. The 41-year-old cited personal reasons for his departure, per reports from ESPN. His exit comes despite having a squad featuring former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suarez.
Mascherano previously managed the Argentina under-20 and under-23 national teams before moving to Major League Soccer. The club has not yet named a permanent successor for the vacancy at Chase Stadium. Inter Miami finished the 2024 regular season at the top of the Eastern Conference standings. Club officials are expected to begin the search for a new head coach immediately, according to Reuters.
