Union Berlin promoted Marie-Louise Eta to the position of head coach following the departure of Nenad Bjelica. Eta previously served as an assistant coach at the club and now becomes the first woman to lead a men's team in one of Europe's top five leagues. The German club confirmed the appointment ahead of their upcoming league fixtures, per Sky Sports.
Eta first joined the first-team coaching staff in November 2023. She worked alongside interim manager Marco Grote before continuing her role under Bjelica. According to The Guardian, the 34-year-old former midfielder won the Champions League as a player with Turbine Potsdam in 2010. She also coached various German national youth teams before moving into men's professional football.
Union Berlin currently occupy 13th place in the Bundesliga table with 30 points. The team remains involved in a battle to avoid relegation with four matches remaining in the season. Eta took charge of first-team training sessions this week to prepare for the visit of Bayern Munich, according to Reuters.
