Fifa blamed for high World Cup transport costs

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has accused Fifa of failing to fund transport for the upcoming men's World Cup tournament.

Fans attending the World Cup this summer face transport costs of $100 for train travel to matches. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill stated that Fifa failed to provide necessary funding for transit operations. This lack of financial support means spectators must pay for high ticket prices at the tournament, per The Guardian.

Sherrill criticised the governing body for expecting local taxpayers or fans to cover the costs of shuttling visitors to the MetLife Stadium. The venue is scheduled to host eight matches during the competition, including the final. The Governor noted that while the state is prepared for the influx of visitors, the financial burden should not fall solely on the public, according to Reuters.

Fifa has not yet commented on the specific allegations regarding the New Jersey transit funding. The men's World Cup is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Organisers expect millions of fans to travel between host cities during the month-long event starting in June.
