Championship clubs reject VAR challenge system

English Football League clubs have voted against introducing a challenge-based Video Assistant Referee system for the next season.

Championship clubs opted to reject the introduction of a Video Assistant Referee system for the 2026-27 campaign. The proposal featured a challenge-based format rather than the constant monitoring used in the Premier League. According to Sky Sports, the decision followed a meeting where teams discussed the financial and logistical implications of the technology.

The English Football League previously explored alternative systems to improve officiating without the lengthy delays seen in the top flight. Per The Guardian, several clubs expressed concerns regarding the setup costs and the potential impact on the flow of matches. Officials confirmed that the current officiating structure will remain in place for the upcoming season.

While the Premier League continues to use full VAR, the secondary tier will operate without video assistance for another year. The league intends to keep reviewing technology options to support referees in the future, as reported by The Athletic. For now, on-field officials retain sole responsibility for all match decisions in the competition.
