Carrick secures Champions League for Man Utd

Football

Interim manager Michael Carrick has guided Manchester United to a 3-2 victory over Liverpool, confirming a top-five finish.

Manchester United secured a place in the 2026-27 Champions League with a 3-2 home win against Liverpool on Sunday. Kobbie Mainoo scored a 77th-minute winner after goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko had given United an early lead. Liverpool equalised in the second half through Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo before Mainoo's deciding strike, according to The Guardian.

Carrick has now earned 32 points from 14 matches since replacing Ruben Amorim in January. The victory ensures United will finish in the top five with three league games remaining. Per beIN SPORTS, the interim boss has defeated every other member of the 'Big Six' during his tenure.

Despite the result, United's hierarchy is yet to confirm a permanent appointment. Reports from The Mirror suggest Carrick is the leading choice, but the club is also considering Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique. Carrick described leading the team as feeling "pretty natural" but stated his future is out of his control.
