Carlisle United face National League return

Carlisle United must prepare for another season in the National League following their recent relegation from the Football League.

Carlisle United remain in the National League for the 2026-27 season after failing to secure an immediate return to League Two. Manager Mike Williamson took over the Cumbrians in September 2024 following the departure of Paul Simpson, according to Sky Sports. The club struggled for consistency throughout the campaign and finished in the mid-table positions.

Owner Tom Piatak previously committed to long-term investment in the squad and infrastructure at Brunton Park. However, the club confirmed that several first-team players will depart this summer following the expiration of their contracts, per the News & Star. Carlisle United won 11 matches during the league season, a total that left them outside of the play-off places.

The board of directors expressed support for the current management structure despite the lack of promotion. The club announced plans to reorganise the recruitment department before the upcoming transfer window. Supporters will see the team compete in the fifth tier for a second consecutive year, according to The Guardian.
