Sunderland defender Dan Ballard received a red card for pulling an opponent's hair during a Premier League fixture on Saturday.

Sunderland defender Dan Ballard became the third player dismissed for hair pulling in the Premier League this season following an incident on 2 May. The Northern Ireland international received a straight red card for the offence, according to match reports from the Stadium of Light. Per Sky Sports, the dismissal follows similar incidents involving other top-flight players earlier in the 2025-26 campaign.

Current football laws categorise hair pulling as violent conduct, which carries a mandatory three-match suspension. Match officials have faced increased scrutiny regarding the consistency of these decisions. International Football Association Board guidelines state that pulling an opponent's hair constitutes an act of brutality and must result in a sending-off.

The Premier League has seen a rise in such dismissals since August, leading to discussions amongst pundits and former referees about potential law amendments. Despite the debate, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited maintains that such actions fall under serious foul play or violent conduct, per The Guardian. Sunderland have not yet confirmed if they intend to appeal against the automatic ban.
