Australia wants big screen World Cup ban lifted

Football Australia has requested that the Victorian government end a ban on screening World Cup matches at Melbourne's Federation Square.

Football Australia officials have urged the Victorian government to reconsider its decision regarding public broadcasts at Federation Square. The site traditionally hosts large-scale screenings of major sporting events in Melbourne. Authorities previously introduced restrictions following crowd disturbances during the men's 2022 tournament, according to Reuters.

James Johnson, the chief executive of Football Australia, stated that the organisation wants to ensure fans have safe spaces to gather for future tournaments. The request comes as Australia prepares to host or participate in upcoming international fixtures. Police and government officials citing safety concerns have maintained the current ban on the public square, per The Guardian.

Supporters have voiced their disappointment over the lack of communal viewing areas in the city centre. Federation Square became a focal point for national celebrations when the Socceroos reached the knockout stages in Qatar. Football Australia remains in discussions with state representatives to resolve the security issues and allow the ban to be lifted before the next major event cycle.
