Akil Howson will become the first black official to feature in an FA Cup final when Chelsea face Manchester City at Wembley.

Akil Howson is set to make history as the first black match official to feature in an FA Cup final. He will serve as an assistant referee for the match between Chelsea and Manchester City, according to the Football Association. The fixture is scheduled to take place at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 17 May 2026.

Andrew Madley will lead the officiating team as the referee for the showpiece event. Howson and Harry Lennard have been appointed as the two assistant referees, while John Brooks will act as the fourth official. Michael Oliver is the designated video assistant referee for the final, per the Premier League.

Howson previously became the first person of colour to serve as a permanent official in the Premier League during the 2023-24 season. His selection for the final follows his involvement in more than 30 matches across the current campaign. The Football Association confirmed the appointments earlier today following the conclusion of the semi-final fixtures.
