Rob Green is perhaps, sadly, best remembered to his gaff which gave away a goal to USA in the 2010 World Cup finals but on this day in 2009 he hit the headlines when he became the first England goalkeeper to be sent off. Playing in Dnipropetrovsk in a World Cup qualifier against Ukraine he was red-carded for a professional foul on Artem Milevskiy after just 14 minutes. He was replaced by David James, the spot kick was missed but England lost 1-0 although by then had already won a place in the World Cup finals in South Africa. 11 th October
