ON THIS DAY
3RD JANUARY
3 historic moments in football history on 3rd January.
2004
Plymouth Argyle had a great 2003/04 campaign, finishing the season as Second Division champions. Their best run came in November to January when in 10 League outings they won 9 and drew the other and only conceded goals in one of those matches. Their best result was recorded on 3rd January 2004 when Chesterfield visited Home Park. Argyle took the lead through Lee Hodges after just 4 minutes and after 18 minutes they were 5-0 up. 'Just' two more goals were added with the 7-0 victory equalling Argyle's record winning margin in a League match (twice they have won League matches 8-1)
1999
Sepp Blatter, President of FIFA, announced that consideration was being made for a revolutionary change to the World Cup. It seemed that FIFA considered the format of the World Cup to be out of date. Blatter believed the competition was still rooted in the 1930s when competing countries had to 'chug' from one continent to another on ships. The suggestion was that the World Cup would be staged every two years which would mean that the Euros would be no more unless they were used as a qualification competition for the World Cup. Most saw it as a plan by FIFA to capitalise on the massive income the World Cup brought them while it would also limit the growing influence of UEFA. Thankfully the proposal found few supporters - could any of us cope with a World Cup every two years!
1974
After a spat between Chelsea manager Dave Sexton and players Peter Osgood and Alan Hudson the two Chelsea stars were suspended and transfer-listed. Neither played for the club again, Hudson moving to Stoke City and Osgood to Southampton.
