ON THIS DAY

27TH AUGUST

3 historic moments in football history on 27th August.

1988
Unfinished building work on the East Stand saw Tottenham’s first home League match of the season – against Coventry – postponed and delayed the League debut of a major Spurs summer signing – one Paul Gascoigne.
1988
Tony Cottee needed to impress on his debut for Everton - his £2.2 million summer move from West Ham to Goodison made him the most expensive purchase ever by a British club. He did impress - scoring after 34 seconds and completing a hat-trick in the 4-0 defeat of Newcastle United.
1986
Having lost their Eastville ground to the developers Bristol Rovers played their first match at their new home – non-league Bath City’s Twerton Park. The start of their Littlewoods Cup tie against Reading was delayed 15 minutes to allow all the 3,760 crowd to get in – Reading won 2-1.
