ON THIS DAY

4TH APRIL

3 historic moments in football history on 4th April.

1983
Wigan Athletic director Bobby Charlton took over as caretaker manager of Wigan after Larry Lloyd was sacked. He left the job in July 1983. 5 th April
1959
For the first time a club scored double figures in a Division 4 match – Hartlepools United (they had that extra s in their name in those days!) also setting a club record League victory when defeating Barrow 10-1 at the Victoria Ground.
1953
Duncan Edwards made his debut for Manchester United - a memorable moment in a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Cardiff City in a First Division match at Old Trafford. He was just 16 years 185 days old making him United's youngest ever first team player at the time. Just less than two years later - April 2nd 1955 - he made his England debut against Scotland which made him at the time the youngest player to play for England in the 20th Century, a record only bettered in 1998 by Michael Owen. Amazingly even after being a Manchester United first team player for 2 years and having been capped for England he was still young enough to pick up an FA Youth Cup winners medal for the Reds! Many argue that he was United's - and England's - most talented player ever but the tragic facts are that he only made 177 first team appearances for Manchester United (21 goals) and played 18 times for England (5 goals) before losing his life at Munich in 1958.
