ON THIS DAY

15TH APRIL

2 historic moments in football history on 15th April.

1989
At 3.06pm the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough ground was brought to a halt when it became apparent that overcrowding at the Leppings Lane End was causing serious injuries to Liverpool supporters in the standing terraces. The death of 97 fans was the worst disaster in English football history and things would never be the same again. Was it really that long ago - and isn't it a national disgrace that the full truth of what happened on that tragic day is still not known! 16 th April
1970
The record attendance for a European club competition match was set at Hampden Park when 136,505 saw Celtic beat Leeds to reach the European Cup Final. Celtic lost to Feyenoord in the final. Surely that's a record that will never be broken?
