Van Dijk: Pundits have 'duty of responsibility'

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk believes former players working as pundits hold a 'duty of responsibility' towards current footballers.

Virgil van Dijk stated that pundits should be mindful of their criticism, particularly concerning the younger generation of players. The Liverpool captain made these comments during a discussion with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville ahead of a match against Manchester City. Van Dijk acknowledged that he personally handles criticism well, but expressed concern for younger players who are constantly exposed to social media.

He suggested that some criticism can become 'clickbait', designed to provoke reactions without considering the mental impact on players. Van Dijk has previously engaged in public exchanges with former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney over his critiques. He emphasised that while criticism is a normal part of football, former players have a responsibility to the new generation.
