Union Berlin have named Marie-Louise Eta as interim head coach, making her the first female manager in the history of the men's Bundesliga. The German club appointed Eta to the position following the departure of Nenad Bjelica. According to Reuters, Eta previously served as an assistant coach at the club before taking over first-team duties on a temporary basis.
Union Berlin currently occupy 13th place in the Bundesliga table with 30 points from 28 matches. The team sits six points clear of the relegation play-off spot, per official league standings. Her first match in charge will be against Bayern Munich next weekend.
Eta, aged 32, joined the coaching staff in 2023 and has worked extensively with the under-19 squad. Sky Sports reports that the appointment marks a historic milestone for gender representation in European men's football. The club has not yet confirmed the duration of her interim tenure while they search for a permanent successor to Bjelica.
