Manchester United academy director Stephen Torpey aims to establish the club as the best in the world for youth development. Torpey, who previously worked at Manchester City, succeeded Nick Cox in the role. He told club media that staff must demand world-class standards daily to ensure the academy remains a leader in player production.
The academy chief emphasised that the club should not act as parents to its young players. Instead, Torpey wants to foster an environment where individuals take responsibility for their own progression. He highlighted 14-year-old JJ Gabriel as a talent currently within the system. Gabriel recently trained with the under-18 squad despite his age, according to The Athletic.
Torpey also referenced the influence of former United midfielder Michael Carrick on the club's development culture. Per Sky Sports, the academy recently celebrated a milestone of 250 graduates reaching the first team. The director confirmed that the club will continue to prioritise local recruitment alongside national and international scouting to maintain its historic pathway.
