Former manager Tony Pulis has proposed a new approach to youth development to support players who fail to reach professional levels.

Tony Pulis has called for a significant restructure of the English academy system. The former Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion manager expressed concerns regarding the high number of young players released by clubs without a professional career. According to Sky Sports, Pulis suggested that academies should focus more on education and vocational training to prepare youngsters for life outside of football.

Pulis argued that the current model creates a narrow pathway that benefits only a small percentage of participants. He believes that clubs have a duty of care to ensure the 99 per cent who do not make it are not left without options, per reports from The Guardian. The veteran coach recommended that the Premier League and English Football League collaborate to standardise support systems across all levels.

His proposals include mandatory life-skills workshops and more robust psychological support for those facing release. Pulis noted that the pressure on teenagers in elite environments can be detrimental to their long-term well-being without proper guidance.
