Szoboszlai Red Card Sparks Anfield Controversy

Football

Dominik Szoboszlai received a late red card after VAR intervention in Manchester City's 2-1 Premier League victory at Anfield.

Manchester City secured a 2-1 Premier League victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 74th minute with a free-kick. Bernardo Silva equalised for City in the 84th minute, before Erling Haaland converted a penalty in the 93rd minute to give City the lead.

Late in stoppage time, Rayan Cherki appeared to score a third goal for Manchester City from the halfway line with Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson out of his area. However, VAR intervened to review an incident involving Szoboszlai and Haaland.

Referee Craig Pawson subsequently disallowed Cherki's goal. Szoboszlai received a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity by fouling Haaland. The Premier League explained Szoboszlai committed a holding offence, despite Haaland also fouling him.

The decision means Szoboszlai will serve a one-match suspension.
