Sunderland AFC has completed the signing of Swedish goalkeeper Melker Ellborg from Malmö FF. The 22-year-old joins the Black Cats for a reported fee of £3m, signing a four-and-a-half year contract. This deal commits him to the Stadium of Light until the summer of 2030.
Ellborg's arrival is expected to pave the way for current Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson to depart on loan. The Swedish international enjoyed a breakthrough 2025 season with Malmö, registering five clean sheets in seven league appearances. He also gained European experience, featuring for Malmö in both the Champions League and Europa League.
The transfer fee makes Ellborg the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of Sweden's Allsvenskan league, according to reports. Ellborg expressed his excitement about joining the club, acknowledging Sunderland's rich history.
