Sonia Bompastor calls for WSL academy reform

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has raised concerns regarding the developmental gap between youth academies and first-team football.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor says a significant gap exists between the academy level and the Women’s Super League. Speaking after a recent fixture, Bompastor noted that young players often struggle to transition into senior squads due to the physical and tactical demands of professional football. The manager suggested that more structured pathways are required to ensure talent does not stall at the under-21 level, according to The Athletic.

Currently, many WSL clubs operate Professional Game Academies. However, the absence of a formal reserve league or a comprehensive loan system limits competitive minutes for emerging players. Per Sky Sports, several managers have echoed these concerns, proposing the introduction of B-teams or enhanced hybrid loan agreements. The Football Association previously launched the PGA system in 2023 to improve elite development, but Bompastor argues further integration is necessary. Chelsea currently sits at the top of the WSL table as they continue to integrate academy products into their senior environment, per official league data.
