The former Scotland and Celtic midfielder has stepped down from his role as manager at Somerset Park with immediate effect.

Scott Brown has departed Ayr United by mutual consent, the Scottish Championship club confirmed on Monday. Brown joined the side in January 2024 and led them to a fourth-place finish during his first full campaign. Assistant manager Steven Whittaker also leaves the club as part of the coaching change, according to Sky Sports.

Ayr United officials stated the decision followed discussions regarding the future direction of the first team. The club currently occupies a mid-table position in the Scottish Championship standings. Brown previously managed Fleetwood Town in the English Football League before moving to the South Ayrshire side, per STV News.

The board of directors expressed gratitude for the work conducted by Brown and Whittaker during their 14-month tenure. Development lead coaching staff will oversee first-team duties while the club begins the recruitment process for a permanent successor. Ayr United faces Raith Rovers in their next league fixture on Saturday, per official club communications.
