Johnny Russell has expressed his desire to win the Scottish Cup with Dundee United after returning to the club in the January transfer window. The 35-year-old striker previously spent 10 years at the club before moving to Derby County in 2013. According to Sky Sports, Russell missed out on a place in the squad for the 2010 Scottish Cup final victory over Ross County.
The forward returned to Tannadice on a contract until the summer of 2026 following his departure from Sporting Kansas City. He stated that the move back to his former club felt right, per STV News. Russell made over 100 appearances during his first spell with the Tangerines before a career that took him to England and the United States.
Dundee United currently occupy ninth position in the Scottish Premiership table with 28 points from 27 matches. The club next faces Aberdeen in a league fixture on 7 March, as reported by the Scottish Professional Football League.
