Johnny Russell has rejoined Dundee United following his departure from Sporting Kansas City at the end of the American season.

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin believes the return of Johnny Russell will provide a significant boost to the squad. The 35-year-old striker returned to Tannadice after seven seasons in Major League Soccer, according to Sky Sports. He previously scored 45 goals for the club before departing in 2013.

Goodwin told the Courier that Russell's experience and leadership are vital for the team's current campaign. The forward signed a contract until the summer of 2026 following his release from Sporting Kansas City. He made 232 appearances for the American side and served as their captain for four seasons, per STV News.

United currently sit in the top half of the Scottish Premiership table after a period of consistent form. Russell is available for selection immediately and could feature in the upcoming fixture against Hibernian. The manager noted that the veteran's fitness levels remained high despite the conclusion of the North American league schedule in late 2025.
