Rooney calls Foden final cameo a charity move

Wayne Rooney criticised Manchester City for a late substitution involving Phil Foden during the Carabao Cup final victory against Arsenal.

Manchester City defeated Arsenal to win the Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium. Manager Pep Guardiola introduced Phil Foden as an injury-time substitute during the final seconds of the match. Former England captain Wayne Rooney described the appearance as a "charity" substitution, per Sky Sports.

Rooney suggested that bringing a player of Foden's calibre on for such a brief period was unnecessary. The midfielder had been sidelined recently with a hamstring injury before returning to the matchday squad for the final. Manchester City secured the trophy following a 2-1 victory over the North London club, according to The Guardian.

Foden replaced Erling Haaland in the 94th minute of the contest. The substitution occurred moments before the referee blew the final whistle. Arsenal had previously equalised through Kai Havertz before a late winner from Kevin De Bruyne sealed the result for the reigning champions. The victory marks the first major domestic trophy of the season for Guardiola's side.
