Martyn Williams, the chair of the Independent Football Regulator, stated that the clock is ticking for football authorities to agree on a new financial settlement. Speaking at a conference in London, Williams urged the Premier League and English Football League to resolve their ongoing impasse regarding revenue sharing. The regulator possesses backstop powers to intervene if the two parties fail to reach a voluntary agreement, according to The Guardian.
Discussions between the leagues have stalled over the size and structure of a support package for the lower divisions. The Premier League previously paused talks in March 2024, but the introduction of the Football Governance Bill has increased pressure for a resolution. The bill aims to ensure the financial sustainability of clubs across the pyramid, per Sky Sports. Williams noted that while the regulator prefers a football-led solution, it remains prepared to use its statutory powers to protect the interests of fans and clubs if necessary.
