Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe says Michael Carrick is doing an excellent job but refused to discuss a permanent appointment.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has praised interim head coach Michael Carrick for his performance at Old Trafford. Speaking to Sky Sports at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, Ratcliffe described the 44-year-old as doing an "excellent job." However, when questioned on whether Carrick would receive the role on a permanent basis, the co-owner replied that he was "not going there."

Carrick took over in January 2026 following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. Under his leadership, United have secured six victories from eight matches, according to the Premier League. This run included consecutive wins against Manchester City and Arsenal. Despite a recent 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United, the club has risen to third in the Premier League table.

United currently sit on 51 points after 29 matches, level with Aston Villa but ahead on goal difference. Ratcliffe noted that the club is focused on Champions League qualification, with seven or eight matches remaining in the season. Carrick's current contract as interim manager runs until the end of the 2025-26 campaign.
