The Premier League will provide five teams for the Champions League in the 2026-27 season. England secured one of two European Performance Spots for the second consecutive year, according to Sky Sports. The extra place is awarded to the two nations whose clubs achieve the best collective performance in UEFA competitions during the current campaign.
Italy and Germany previously claimed these additional slots for the 2024-25 season. However, recent results for English clubs in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League have guaranteed a top-two finish in the seasonal coefficient rankings, per The Guardian. This ensures the team finishing fifth in the Premier League will enter the revamped 36-team league phase.
Uefa introduced the Performance Spots as part of a format change that replaced the traditional group stage. The Premier League currently occupies first place in the seasonal coefficient table. This development means eight or nine English teams could potentially qualify for European competitions next term, depending on domestic cup winners and final league standings.
