Poll opens for Scotland's greatest international goal

The Scottish Football Association has launched a public vote to determine the most iconic goal scored by the men's national team.

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) opened a public poll on 20 March 2026 to identify the greatest goal in the history of the men's national side. Fans can choose from a shortlist of 16 entries spanning several decades of international competition. The competition features a bracket-style format where individual goals compete in head-to-head rounds.

Included in the selection is Archie Gemmill's solo effort against the Netherlands during the 1978 World Cup and James McFadden's long-range strike against France in 2007. According to the SFA, the initiative aims to celebrate the heritage of the national team ahead of upcoming fixtures. Patrik Schick's goal against Scotland from 2021 is notably excluded as the poll focuses on Scottish scorers only.

Voting takes place via the official Scotland national team digital platforms, per Sky Sports. The SFA will announce the winner after the final round of voting concludes later this month. This process follows similar historical retrospectives conducted by other national associations, according to STV News.
