Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill says the national team must accept 15-year-old Chris Atherton's decision to switch his international allegiance. The Glenavon midfielder previously represented Northern Ireland at the youth level but recently chose to join the Republic of Ireland setup. O'Neill stated that the coaching staff cannot force players to remain with the association if they wish to move elsewhere, according to The News Letter.
Atherton gained attention in 2022 when he became the youngest senior footballer in the United Kingdom, debuting for Glenavon at 13 years old. He has since been involved in the Irish Football Association's Elite Performance Programme. Despite the disappointment of losing a prospect, O'Neill noted that such transitions are part of the modern game, per the Belfast Telegraph.
The manager confirmed that the association had discussed the matter with the player and his family. However, O'Neill emphasised that Northern Ireland will focus on developing individuals who are fully committed to the nation. The Republic of Ireland has already included the teenager in its under-16 squad for upcoming fixtures.
