Leicester City received an immediate six-point deduction on Thursday for breaching the English Football League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). An independent commission imposed the sanction, which the EFL board ratified. The club exceeded the permitted PSR loss threshold by £20.8 million over the three-year period ending 2023-24.
The commission, appointed under Premier League rules, found Leicester guilty of the breach. The Premier League had initially argued for a 12-point deduction, citing the scale of the overspend. Leicester, however, maintained a financial penalty would have been more appropriate.
Former Foxes striker Matty Fryatt urged the club to "take their medicine" and move on, according to BBC Sport. The penalty significantly impacts Leicester's current Championship campaign, leaving them just outside the relegation zone on goal difference. Leicester City expressed disappointment with the decision, describing the punishment as "disproportionate". The club confirmed it would consider its next steps, including a potential appeal against the ruling.
