Leeds United condemn boos during Ramadan pause

Leeds United officials have described loud booing during a scheduled Ramadan break in play at Elland Road as disappointing.

Leeds United released a statement following their Premier League match against Chelsea on Saturday. The incident occurred during a brief pause in play intended to allow players observing Ramadan to break their fast. Match officials paused the game after the sun had set, following guidance issued by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited.

Loud boos were heard from sections of the crowd at Elland Road during this interval. The club stated that while the majority of supporters were respectful, the actions of a minority were disappointing. Leeds United officials confirmed they are working to identify those involved in the disruption, according to The Athletic.

Muslim players in the Premier League and English Football League are permitted to take liquids or supplements on the touchline during such breaks. The league introduced these measures in 2021 to support diverse player needs. The club reiterated its commitment to inclusivity and stated that discriminatory behaviour has no place in football, per reports from Sky Sports.
