Home nations pursue historic World Cup place

Football

Wales and Northern Ireland seek to join England and Scotland in the 48-team 2026 World Cup during this month's European qualifiers.

All four British home nations have never appeared together at a single World Cup finals. According to FIFA records, the 1958 tournament in Sweden remains the only occasion where England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland all qualified for the same edition. During that competition, Wales and Northern Ireland both reached the quarter-finals, while England and Scotland were eliminated in the group stages.

England and Scotland have already secured their places for the 2026 World Cup, which is the first to feature 48 teams. Per Sky Sports, Wales and Northern Ireland must now navigate the European qualifying play-offs to ensure their participation. The expanded format increases the total number of berths available to UEFA nations to 16. If both teams progress, it will mark the first time in 68 years that the four nations have competed at the same finals. Previous attempts to replicate the 1958 feat failed, most recently in 2022 when Northern Ireland and Scotland missed out on the tournament in Qatar.
