Shaka Hislop, the former Newcastle and West Ham goalkeeper, has labelled the United Kingdom's prostate cancer testing protocol as "alarming". Hislop, 56, recently completed radiation therapy after his aggressive prostate cancer spread to his pelvic bone. He initially discovered the cancer 18 months ago after insisting on a PSA test during his annual physical.
Hislop underwent a radical prostatectomy in December 2024, but the cancer later recurred. He stressed the importance of early detection, particularly for men of Caribbean heritage, who face the highest mortality rate from the disease.
The UK National Screening Committee recently recommended against routine prostate cancer screening for most men in the UK. Hislop urged men to insist on PSA tests, especially where they are not routinely encouraged.
