Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has urged veteran defender Seamus Coleman to extend his international playing career.

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has told Seamus Coleman that he hopes the Everton defender continues to play for the national side. Hallgrimsson met with the 37-year-old recently to discuss his future. The manager stated he does not want the player to retire from international duty yet, according to The Guardian.

Coleman has earned 74 caps for his country since making his debut in 2011. He has struggled with injuries recently, appearing in 11 Premier League matches for Everton this season, per Sky Sports. Hallgrimsson believes the captain's leadership remains vital for the squad as they prepare for upcoming fixtures.

The defender signed a one-year contract extension with Everton in June 2024. Hallgrimsson praised the player's character and influence on younger teammates during their discussions. The manager confirmed he would respect whatever decision the defender makes regarding his availability for the Republic of Ireland. Coleman has yet to make a final announcement on his international future, according to The Athletic.
