French sports minister Marina Ferrari has stated there is no desire for a World Cup boycott over US President Donald Trump's threats to annex Greenland. Ms Ferrari confirmed the French government's position on Tuesday, January 20, amidst growing political tensions. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is scheduled to begin in June.
President Trump's ambitions to take control of Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, have strained relations with European allies. Trump has also targeted France among eight European countries with tariffs for their opposition to his drive to annex Greenland. This situation prompted some French politicians, including leftist lawmaker Éric Coquerel, to suggest a boycott should be considered.
However, Ms Ferrari emphasised the importance of separating sport from politics. She described the World Cup as "an extremely important moment for all sports lovers". The ministry currently holds no intention to withdraw from the major competition, according to Ms Ferrari.
