Dimitri Payet has retired from professional football after a career spanning two decades. The 38-year-old attacking midfielder most recently played for Vasco da Gama in Brazil after leaving Marseille in 2023. Payet described the decision as the end of a beautiful journey, according to Sky Sports.
The Frenchman earned 38 caps for the national team and played a prominent role during the 2016 European Championship. He spent 18 months in the Premier League with West Ham United between 2015 and 2017. During his time in London, he scored 15 goals in 60 appearances across all competitions, per West Ham United.
Payet spent the majority of his playing career in Ligue 1, representing Nantes, Saint-Etienne, Lille, and Marseille. He recorded more than 300 appearances for Marseille across two separate spells at the club. The midfielder moved to South America in August 2023 to join Vasco da Gama on a free transfer. He finishes his career with more than 140 professional goals, according to ESPN.
