Former West Brom keeper Tony Godden dies aged 70

West Bromwich Albion have announced the death of their former goalkeeper Tony Godden at the age of 70.

Tony Godden, who played 312 games for West Bromwich Albion, has died at the age of 70. The club confirmed the news on Monday, pay tribute to a player who served at The Hawthorns between 1977 and 1986. During his nine-year spell, Godden established himself as a regular fixture in the side that competed in the First Division.

He famously saved two penalties in a single match against Coventry City in 1978. His performances helped the club reach the UEFA Cup quarter-finals and achieve high league finishes under manager Ron Atkinson. Godden also represented Chelsea, Birmingham City, and Bury during a career that spanned more than 450 professional appearances, according to West Bromwich Albion.

After retiring from playing, he worked as a goalkeeping coach at several clubs, including West Bromwich Albion and Peterborough United. The club plans to hold a period of applause before its next home fixture, per Sky Sports. Godden remains one of only 46 players to have made over 300 appearances for the Baggies.
