Former Romania coach Mircea Lucescu dies aged 80

The legendary Romanian manager has died five days after resigning from his position as the national team head coach.

Mircea Lucescu has died at the age of 80, according to reports from Romania. The former national team manager passed away on 7 April 2026. His death occurs five days after he resigned from his second stint in charge of the Romania national side on 2 April 2026.

Lucescu enjoyed a managerial career spanning more than 40 years. He achieved significant success with Shakhtar Donetsk, where he won eight league titles and the 2009 UEFA Cup, per Reuters. The Romanian also managed clubs including Inter Milan, Galatasaray, and Dynamo Kyiv during his long career.

He earned 70 caps for Romania as a player and captained the team at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. Lucescu later led the national team to qualification for the 1984 European Championship. At the time of his death, he was recognised as one of the most decorated managers in the history of association football, as reported by The Guardian.
