Former Premier League winners face historical relegation

Football

Several English football giants have dropped out of the top flight despite possessing squads previously considered safe from the drop.

Manchester City remains the only club to suffer relegation from the top flight in the season following a title win. City finished as champions in 1937 but fell to the second tier in 1938. Blackburn Rovers experienced a similar decline, dropping into the First Division in 1999 just four years after winning the Premier League title, per the Premier League.

Leicester City also faced relegation in 2023, seven years after its 2016 title success. The club finished 18th in the table despite having a squad featuring several international regulars. West Ham United famously went down in 2003 with 42 points, which remains the highest total for a relegated team in a 38-game season.

Other notable drops include Leeds United in 2004 and Newcastle United in 2009 and 2016. According to Sky Sports, Leeds United suffered financial difficulties prior to its exit from the top flight. These instances challenge the common phrase that certain teams are too good to go down.
