Fifa mandates female coaches for women's tournaments

World football's governing body has introduced new regulations requiring women's teams to include at least one female coach.

Fifa confirmed new technical regulations requiring all teams in its women's competitions to employ at least one female head coach or assistant coach. The governing body announced the move during its council meeting in Zurich on 19 March 2026. The mandate applies to all Fifa-run women's tournaments, including the Women's World Cup and age-group championships, according to Reuters.

Officials stated the rule aims to accelerate the professional development of female coaches globally. Data from recent international tournaments showed a disparity in coaching representation, which prompted the regulatory change. Member associations must ensure their technical staff comply with these requirements for all upcoming Fifa fixtures.

In addition to coaching staff changes, Fifa introduced improved maternity protections for female players and coaches, per Sky Sports. These updates extend existing rights to include adoptive parents and non-biological mothers. The measures are part of a broader strategy to professionalise the women's game and provide greater job security for staff and athletes across all 211 member nations.
