A survey conducted by the Football Supporters' Association revealed that 75 percent of match-going fans oppose the use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR). The report indicated that supporters believe the technology negatively impacts the experience of celebrating goals. Per the FSA, only one in 20 fans who have experienced VAR in stadiums rated their experience as good or very good.
The study also found that 95 percent of respondents felt the spontaneity of goal celebrations has been lost since the introduction of the technology. According to Sky Sports, fans expressed frustration over the length of time taken to reach decisions during matches.
The Premier League introduced VAR at the start of the 2019-20 season to assist officials with clear and obvious errors. However, the FSA reported that 63 percent of fans now support the total removal of the system from the English top flight. The findings were presented to the Premier League as part of ongoing discussions regarding matchday experiences and officiating standards.
