Twelve European teams compete for the final four places at the 2026 World Cup as play-off semi-finals begin on Thursday.

European qualifying for the 2026 World Cup reaches the play-off stage today with 12 nations competing for four remaining spots. According to UEFA, the format consists of four paths with three teams in each. Each path features a single-leg semi-final followed by a final to determine who progresses to the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Scotland face a semi-final fixture as they aim to reach their first World Cup since 1998, per Sky Sports. Wales also remain in contention for a successive tournament appearance following their participation in 2022. The winners of tonight's semi-finals will progress to the path finals scheduled for 31 March, according to Reuters.

FIFA expanded the 2026 tournament to include 48 teams, providing Europe with 16 total qualification slots. Twelve nations secured direct entry by winning their respective qualifying groups earlier in the cycle. The play-off participants include the 12 group runners-up and selected nations based on their UEFA Nations League rankings.
