Egan urges Ireland to keep momentum for Czechia tie

Republic of Ireland defender John Egan has called on his team-mates to maintain their form in Thursday's World Cup play-off semi-final.

Republic of Ireland travel to face the Czech Republic in a single-leg play-off at the Fortuna Arena in Prague on Thursday. The fixture kicks off at 19:45 GMT, with a place in the Path D final at stake for the winner. John Egan believes the squad must carry the momentum from a 3-2 victory over Hungary in November, per the Irish Mirror.

Egan returned to international football in October after a two-year absence following an Achilles injury. The Hull City defender was an unused substitute during the qualifying win in Budapest where Troy Parrott scored a hat-trick. Parrott's 96th-minute winner secured second place in Group F for the Irish, according to the Irish Examiner.

Heimir Hallgrimsson has a fully fit 25-man squad for the trip, although defender Liam Scales is unavailable through suspension. The winner of the tie will progress to a final against either Denmark or North Macedonia on March 31, per the Irish Times. The victors of that match will qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
