Woking have appointed Jermain Defoe as their new head coach, according to the National League. The former Tottenham Hotspur and England forward succeeds Michael Doyle at the Kingfield Stadium. Defoe previously held a coaching role within the academy at Tottenham Hotspur before his move to the Surrey club.
He scored 20 goals in 57 appearances for England and is the ninth-highest goalscorer in Premier League history. Woking currently occupy 15th place in the National League table following a 1-1 draw against York City yesterday, per Sky Sports. The club confirmed Defoe will take charge of the first team immediately.
The appointment marks Defoe's first position as a lead manager since retiring from professional football in 2022. He inherits a side that has won two of its last five league fixtures. Club officials expressed confidence that his experience at the highest level of the game will benefit the squad, according to a statement on the Woking website.
